Stress & Sleep Tips
I’m a die-hard dog lover and vividly remember the first time I saw a “Happy Hoodie” on a YouTube dog grooming channel. It was fascinating! A petite, gutsy groomer managed an anxious Rhodesian Ridgeback with surprising ease, all thanks to a simple piece of fabric slipped over its ears. My immediate thought? What kind of sorcery is this and where can I get one? It takes 3 hours to dry my double-coated fluff-a-nutter, Nikko - even using a professional-grade blow dryer that doubles as a wormhole creator - so I had to try this hoodie thing out.
When I put the hoodie on Nikko for our next grooming adventure, and saw how he was able to almost nap during the experience, a light bulb went off. My favorite sleep headphones - actually more of a headband - seemed like a high-tech version of Nikko’s hoodie. This led me to wonder: Could my headband be doing more for my sleep than just playing sounds?
In our modern lives, it’s increasingly common to reach for earplugs or headphones to mute or soften environmental noise, a stark contrast to our ancestors. We’re wired to tolerate natural noises - like the roar of a waterfall or the sudden thud of a falling tree - with only a minor stress spike. However, modern noises like the roar of a motorcycle, the intermittent hum of a hotel air conditioner, or the excitement of your housemate video gaming into the wee hours of the night.
While some might be able to ignore these sounds, for others, they ramp up stress levels and keep us on edge, which is not helpful for restful sleep. Sleep is essentially a lack of activity in the mind and body. The more negative stress that accumulates over the course of the day, the harder it can be for that activity to dial down and pave the way for restful sleep. Enter modern devices. Though I generally prefer natural solutions, these gadgets can help us tolerate our noisy world a bit better.
Whether it’s creating pin-drop silence or just enough noise to distract us from busy thoughts, modern equipment like headphones and earbuds can be surprisingly effective in a variety of ways. They not only help us manage stress but also enhance our sleep quality by shielding us from disruptive sounds.
